August is Immunization Awareness Month!

By Lasonja W.

Did you know that the month of August is Immunization Awareness Month? Just like the rest of your family members, your pets need to stay current on their immunizations as well. Immunizations are important to ensure your pet remains in good health so they are protected from diseases like rabies. You’ll want to be sure your pet is protected especially if they visit boarding kennels or dog parks on a regular basis.

While most puppies and kittens typically began their vaccinations at 6-8 weeks, you’ll want to be sure to stay on schedule for receiving shots. Your local vet can help you understand your pets needs and timing for booster shots since vaccinations will vary between felines and canines.

It’s important to educate yourself especially since there are many myths out there. Some people believe pets that remain indoors don’t require vaccinations, however that’s not true. Protect your furry friend and get smart on immunizations.

Start by ensuring you have your pets immunization records in a safe place, if not call your vet and request copies. Review your records and ensure your pet is up to date. Keep in mind shots can be costly so you may need to add that expense to your budget, especially if you have multiple pets. Also don’t forget that some vet clinics require appointments so it may take some time before you are able to get in and see the veterinarian.
