How to Spot Signs of Food Allergies

By Lasonja W.

Just like humans your pets can suffer from food allergies as well. You should educate yourself and ensure you know how to spot the signs. There are different symptoms to be aware of and different steps you can take to take care of your pet.

Did you know that some proteins or grains in pet food can cause issues? A lot of proteins such as beef and chicken are in almost all pet foods. Soy, corn, fish and lamb are also proteins that could potentially cause allergic reactions in pets. Some common symptoms to watch out for are:

- Excessive itching
- Excessive licking
- Chewing on skin or paws
- Skin issues
- Gastrointestinal problems

Even if your pet is thriving on a high-quality diet like Purina, human foods and treats (link to pet graphic) we sometimes share can cause unexpected reactions. That handful of raw carrots, a scrap of chicken from your sandwich, or a bite of scrambled egg might seem harmless, but pets can be sensitive to foods we eat every day.

If you notice any of the symptoms above after giving a new treat or sharing a bite, it’s a good idea to consult your veterinarian. They can help determine if the issue is a food sensitivity and guide you on what’s safe to share.

Keeping your pet’s main diet consistent ensures they’re getting balanced nutrition, while mindful sharing of human foods allows you to enjoy cozy, fall snack moments together safely.

Be sure you know the signs of food allergies in your pet.
