One of the best perks of military life? Every duty station comes with a chance to explore somewhere new, and if you're anything like us, your dog is coming along for the adventure.

Whether you're soaking up the California sunshine, exploring the Carolina coast, or hiking through Hawaii's lush landscapes, there are plenty of places where both two-legged and four-legged family members can stretch their legs. Here's a roundup of some of our favorite dog-friendly beaches and hiking trails near a few popular military installations.

Camp Pendleton, California
If there's one thing Camp Pendleton families have, it's options. Between the Pacific Ocean and miles of scenic trails, weekends practically plan themselves.

Del Mar Dog Beach (North Beach) - About 30 minutes south of Camp Pendleton, Del Mar's North Beach is a favorite among local dog owners. During the off-season, dogs can enjoy off-leash play, while summer months have designated hours for beach fun. It's the perfect place to let your pup burn off some PCS energy after a long week. Be sure to check seasonal leash rules before heading out.

Huntington Dog Beach - If you're up for a longer drive (about an hour), Huntington Dog Beach is one of Southern California's most famous dog beaches. Wide open sand, plenty of happy pups, and enough room for endless zoomies make it well worth the trip.

Santa Margarita River Trail Preserve - Looking for something other than sand? This shaded trail near Fallbrook offers beautiful scenery, creek crossings during wetter months, and plenty of sniffing opportunities. Just remember to pack extra water, Southern California sunshine doesn't mess around.

Camp Lejeune & MCAS New River, North Carolina
Eastern North Carolina may be known for its beaches, but it's also home to some fantastic trails and coastal adventures.

North Topsail Beach - Just a short drive from Camp Lejeune, North Topsail Beach welcomes leashed dogs year-round, making it an easy weekend escape for military families. The long stretches of sand are perfect for early morning walks or sunset strolls...plus you can collect Shark Teeth while there with your dog. It was one of my top favorite things to do when I was at Camp Lejeune!

Emerald Isle - Another favorite among military families, Emerald Isle allows leashed dogs on the beach year-round. It's a great spot for a relaxing beach day followed by dinner at one of the area's pet-friendly patios.

Croatan National Forest - If your dog prefers pine trees over palm trees, Croatan National Forest offers miles of dog-friendly hiking trails through forests, salt marshes, and scenic waterways. Just keep your pup leashed and watch for wildlife.

Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam & Marine Corps Base Hawaii
Living in Hawaii with a dog comes with one important lesson: always check the rules before heading out. Many beaches and hiking areas have seasonal wildlife protections or leash requirements.

Kailua Beach - Just outside Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kailua Beach is known for its turquoise water and soft white sand. Dogs are welcome on leash in designated areas, making it a beautiful spot for a sunrise walk. Always double-check local regulations before visiting.

Bellows Beach (When Open to the Public) - Bellows is a favorite among military families during public access days. If you're staying on base or have access, it's worth checking current pet policies before packing up the beach gear.

Makapuʻu Lighthouse Trail - While dogs are allowed on leash, be prepared for little shade and warm temperatures. The payoff? Incredible ocean views, whale watching during the winter months, and plenty of photo opportunities.

Fort Liberty, North Carolina
Military families stationed inland don't have to miss out on outdoor adventures.

Raven Rock State Park - Located about an hour from Fort Liberty, this park offers several dog-friendly hiking trails through forests, along rivers, and past impressive rock formations.

Carvers Creek State Park - This hidden gem features relatively easy trails, beautiful longleaf pine forests, and plenty of space for a peaceful afternoon walk with your pup.

Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington
If your dog loves hiking more than swimming, the Pacific Northwest might just be their dream assignment.

Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge Trails - Leashed dogs are welcome on select trails, offering peaceful walks with mountain views and opportunities to spot local wildlife.

Chambers Bay - This Tacoma favorite combines waterfront walking paths with expansive grassy areas where dogs can enjoy a long stroll before relaxing by the water.

Before you load up the car...every beach, trail, and park has its own pet policies, and they can change with the seasons, it's always worth taking a minute to check current leash rules, seasonal restrictions, and parking information.
