Winter Walk Essentials: Protecting Your Dog’s Paws

By Lasonja W.

Depending on what part of the country you live in you are most likely dealing with the winter weather. I know I hate going out in the cold and I'm sure your pets feel the same. While some dogs enjoy the snow it can be harsh on their paws when they go out for a walk or a potty break. It's important to protect your pets paws so ensuring you have some winter essentials is key. Here are some essentials and recommendations for your pet.

Essentials:

1. Booties: Using booties is the best way to protect your pets paws. They help minimize contact with harsh chemicals that can be found in ice salt or melt. Booties come in various sizes and can be purchased online or at your local pet store.

2. Paw Balm: If your pet doesn't have booties it will be important to use balm on their paws before going outside. The balm will help with dry skin and help minimize damage that can be caused by salt on the ground. It will also stop snow from sticking to their paws.

Tips for you:

1. Clean your pets paws immediately: After your pet has been outside you should wipe down their paws. You can use a wet damp cloth or pet wipes. You should wipe between their toes and paw pads. If your pet has been exposed to lots of chemicals you can rinse their paws in warm water.

2. Use safe paw ice melt: While some ice and snow melts are effective, they do contain chemicals that are toxic to dogs. If you treat your driveway or sidewalk you should consider purchasing ice melt that is "pet safe" because some rock salts can cause injuries, irritation or burns to your pets paws.
